Steve’s Weekly Wrap-Up

As an associate of Coliseum Northside: I will provide an exceptional patient experience every day, on every encounter, for every patient. The patient always comes first, no matter what.

As you know last week I was away at a leadership meeting at HCA in Nashville. I had the opportunity to hear from Milton Johnson, our CEO and Chairman of HCA, his top priority for our company in 2015. That is to become the very best in our industry in delivering an exceptional patient experience. In order to accomplish that goal we have to more than just nice to patients. We have to involve them in their care and communicate with them and their families in a way that they understand their care plan and are part of those discussions. Some of the ways we are working towards that here at Northside are bedside reporting and hourly rounding. They need to understand what we are doing and why we are doing specific tasks like administering medications (drug and its side effects), taking blood samples for labs (determining their diagnosis) ,  and cleaning the room (infection control). We can’t merely communicate amongst each other and the physician but also have to make the patient a part of that very important step in our care plan. Thanks for your attention to some of the new processes we are putting in place to improve our patients and families experience at Northside.

You asked and we listened so this year we will award Frist and Nursing Excellence awards for both campuses. The deadline for nominations is NEXT WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18!  Don’t assume that someone else has already nominated the person you might be considering.  All it takes is ONE nomination for a truly hardworking, compassionate humanitarian to be awarded.  This year, each facility will be awarding its own Frist Humanitarian (Physician, Volunteer, and Employee) and Nursing Excellence (Compassionate Care, Professional Mentoring) winners – up to a total of five for each facility!  Nomination forms are available through HR.  Please read the criteria for each carefully and nominate someone who is deserving of these awards.

Coliseum Valentine’s Day at Mercer Basketball! , Saturday, February 14, 4:00 P.M. Hawkins Arena – Mercer University

Enjoy! Go Bears!

We were scheduled to have our JC Sepsis survey this week but our surveyor was sick so it had to be rescheduled. We have also submitted our application for spine certification which should happen sometime in the next 3-6 months. Lots of good stuff happening on the quality of care agenda.

We had a fabulous January with big increases in admissions (+44), surgeries (+78) and ED visits (+402). This is a direct result of the care and compassion your exhibit to our patients and families. It is no surprise that we are number #27 and #8 in HCA for patient experience for inpatient and ED respectively. Thanks again for your commitment to our patients. Thanks to each of your for signing the new thank you cards that we are delivering to every patient after discharge. They should be in the chart and I hope each one of you will sign them as you care for our patients.

We are beginning to plan our next event on the CNH lawn. Thinking about a BBQ competition…. What do you think should be the next event to connect with our community? Send me your ideas!

What does MEWS stand for and what is it designed to do? Respond by Monday to have a chance at a secret prize!!!! I will draw a name from all complete and correct responses.

Recognition:

Congratulations to Davis Andrews, ED night shift, on his recent graduation with a BNS!!

From a family member: My father, TMC, fell January 1st. We took our 92 year old father to you E.R. They could not have been any nicer if Daddy was their own father. Crystal Johnston, Dr. Sanchez and the tech who I forgot to get her name, to the concierge at the desk. All so very, very nice. Thank you for hiring such sweet people and ones so concerned.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
