National-Donut-Day-6.7.14When Salvation Army ensign Helen Purviance decided to fry donuts for World War I soldiers on the front lines, she put donuts on track to become an American favorite. When troops returned home from the war, they wanted those donuts, creating a market that just keeps growing. The Salvation Army in 1938 created Donut Day to honor the men and women who served donuts to World War I troops.

To celebrate, bakeries across the country are rolling out specials to celebrate the deliciously sweet and perfectly fried morsels Homer Simpson just can’t say “no” to. If you want to load up on a dozen or more, you may have to shell out some dough (see what we did there?) but plenty of places are offering donuts absolutely free.511d5ba901f820718f0ee59b05d11cd4
